You try to do something NICE for your students and they're jerks. So far, I've called three parents about behavior.
Nice Number 1: I bought candy canes and cookies. Naughty Number 1: Out of three classes so far today, only ONE has bothered to say thank you. Others have complained because I didn't bring milk, soda, or something to drink, or complained about my choice of cookie.
Nice Number 2: I'm allowing them to watch a movie. Naughty Number 2: 90% of them haven't watched it. Granted, it's Stranger Than Fiction and they can't seem to GET what's going on, but then again they aren't watching it.
Nice Number 3: All they have to do is fill out a worksheet with Character/Place Names and they get a grade. Easy 100, right? Naughty Number 3: MOST of them aren't filling out the worksheet and could care less that this is a grade. I even wrote the ANSWERS on the board. All they have to do is MATCH them correctly.
Nice Number 4: They have an Extra Credit opportunity. Write a one-page, double-spaced size 12 font essay on ONE of the historical mathematicians or scientists who something in the movie is named after and I'll replace their lowest grade on a test with their grade on the essay (most likely a hundred since if they even attemp it, it's more than I expect). Naughty Number 4: They complained that their extra credit was an essay. This is math NOT English. ARG.
By my count, that's four nice things from me and four naughty things from them. Santa better be REAL good to me this year.

I've been totally pwn'd by going green.
Apparently, it's not meant for me to go totally green. When I was 12, I bought a hemp bracelet. I put it on, and in an hour my arm was covered in a rash. My assumption was... I'm allergic to hemp, and I've avoided it like the plague ever since. I've been shopping around looking for environmentally friendly replacements for the stuff I need to buy (like a hat, gloves, scarves... cause I lose them every year) and EVERYTHING I'm finding has some blend of hemp in it. Am I being ridiculous because I broke out once? I suppose it could have been something else that caused the reaction, but honestly... why pay $20 for something I can't wear?
Does anyone know where I can find PURE organic cotton (or wool!) accessories?
I'm still looking, of course, but I'm getting frustrated. - Mood:frustrated

Work has been so hectic and crazy I haven't had a chance to post in the longest. It's going really well, teaching... save one class. They drive me insane. I contemplate murder.
Besides that... I had a Snape moment when I made a girl cry by giving her her grade. I've been filling in for a teacher - we have a staff member who had to have back surgery, and I'm filling in for the teacher teaching her Calculus class - and I didn't have access to his grades for them. They've had one quiz, one test, and then homework grades. She missed a quiz (30% of her grade from ME... not combined) and so it was a zero. Before I handed it to her I tried to explain. I knew she had emotional problems. She wouldn't listen to my explanation and just kept asking for her grade. I handed it to her, and the tears started. Total breakdown. And no amount of explaining to her was helping. Part of me wanted to walk away and leave her like that. I didn't. I talked to her calmly and rationally for 20 minutes, while the OTHER students WAITED to get their grades and make-up work.
I got Guitar Hero 3. It's a LOT harder on Hard than GH2 OR Rocks the 80s, but I've been having fun playing through the playlist. The most difficult thing is getting used to the new controller. It's wireless on the PS3 and the lag is a bit different than the wired one one the PS2.
I think... that's about it for now. I've got a meme to post that I stole from whiner. Fill it out if you get the chance.
( Follow the meme... )
EDIT: OMG. Forgot to tell you. I saw Bucket of Blood which is Will's first cameo movie. It's about some kid who works at a coffee/art bar as a bus boy. He accidentally kills his landlady's cat and he covers it in plaster, and the artists who have always made fun of him suddenly think he's an art genius. They demand more art, and he starts killing humans. Will's cameo goes like this:
Will: *staring at cat* That's the most awesome thing ever. Artist: Want to buy it? Will: I don't have money to buy art. Artist: Oh. Ok. Will: *ducks out of the scene and hits his head on the metal stares behind him*
*later*
Will: I found five dollars. Can I buy your cat?
It's HYSTERICAL. In fact, if you like corny B-grade (I'm not even sure it's B-grade to be honest) horror flicks, you HAVE to see it. - Mood:cold

Note to self: Homecoming week = death for an SGA co-sponsor.
How did I get sucked into this again? Oh, yes, I had no choice. I went to my interview and was told, "You're going to be SGA co-sponsor." Me: Uhhhh... ok? *thinking* Do I still get the job if I say no?
Also, I'm pretty much willing to resign to the fact that I will not have a day off until November. And that the universe hates me because my washer and my dryer broke... they only worked like... 50% before and now they're down to 25%.
Plus, I want to know why I'm the only person in the math department who can do anything. I'm the webmaster. I'm one of the Saturday School tutors. I'm filling in for another math teacher while he fills in for someone who had to have back surgery. Why is there no one else who can do ONE of these things?
I'm not complaining. I'm really not. I love my job. I'm definitely more comfortable where I am right now that where I was last year. Last year I was surrounded by negativity. All they did was complain. This year, we complain... maybe 2 or 3 minutes and move on. There's no dwelling. It's a happy place to work. I like happy. And the kids like me... if the fact that they're taking pictures of me teaching randomly for the yearbook is any indication. Or the fact that they're seeking me out at the football game to intoduce me to parents... Or that when they see me at the Pep Rally they smile and wave... or... and this is my favorite... when they see me walking in the hall they yell, "MRS. WHITLOCK ROLLS HARD, YO!" Cause apparently, I'm gangsta, and I roll hard.
It helps that it's the high school I graduated from... and we just won our Homecoming Game 18 to 8. But I'm really, really tired... and I have to be back at the school at 8 am... and it's midnight. And the Homecoming Dance isn't over until midnight Saturday... and then... I have to work Sunday at the Rec Center. So... that sleep thing sounds good right about now. - Mood:sleepy

This rant has been a long time coming, as you'll probably be able to tell from it's length, and the amount of frustration contained within it. I noticed a trend in American broadcasting... it began some time when I was in high school. When I first saw it, I was struck by how insulting and idiotic it was, but the point was driven home, yet again, when I woke up to Headline News and an interview with a Scottish baggage claim man who helped rescue a police officer who was being attacked by the crazy bomber in the car at the Glasgow airport a few months back. Why is it that American news agencies feel the need to subtitle BRITISH citizens - particularly ones from Ireland or Scotland - who they interview? They're speaking ENGLISH for Christ's sakes! If the general populace hasn't learned to open their ears and freaking LISTEN then maybe we shouldn't be concerned about them understanding what's on the news! People look at me like I'm CRAZY when I say stuff like this but... the language is called ENGLISH for a reason! Don't you find it a BIT insulting that we're subtitling the people who are from the FIRST parts of the world to SPEAK the language?! I can't help but wonder... if they knew we were going to subtitle them, would they agree to be interviewed?! What really kills me is that no one has yet stopped to think that perhaps.... just perhaps... the problem isn't with the people you are subtitling, but with the AMERICAN public. I mean, when you have people on national television speaking like this and THEY weren't being subtitiled and even had the freaking anchors on the Today show coming to their defence, I HAVE to boggle. WTF?! Seriously. Let's subtitle people who are actually speaking grammatically correct English and defend bumbling idiots. YAY America! Sometimes, just sometimes, I'm ashamed of the country I'm from. - Mood:aggravated

You know you're having a bad day when you get to school only to find out that your laptop is having MAJOR power issues, and you can't figure out why. I THINK it's just that the adaptor in the middle of the powe cord has gone bad, but I'm going to try to get the techies to figure it out before I buy a new one.
Right now, I'm using a stupid iBook G4, because it's the only thing the school has available and I HAVE to have something to take attendance. I won't be able to use it to teach computer math, though, so I hope it IS just the power cord on my laptop so that it will be CHEAP to fix.
Alright, I'm out of here for now, so I can take up forms and collect class fees from my homeroom. YAY! What fun!

I joined a game for OCs, and we need 6 more CHARACTERS to start. I'm excited. I want to play. Thus, the pimpage. If you roleplay, check it out. PWEASE?! *puppy dog eyes* It's over on GreatestJournal. ( Viva Las Vegas! )

I haven't had much time to think/breathe/write/post this past week. There's so much to get done that it's absolutely ridiculous. I spent most of last week on a great treasure hunt for things that weren't broken. The desk originally in my room was junk, and that's putting it mildly. The right side of the desk was held up by a piece of furniture that wasn't even part of the desk, and it wasn't tall enough, so the previous teacher added an algebra book underneath it to prop it up. The three drawers on the left hand side didn't work; if you opened one all three opened. I had to go on a treasure hunt to find another desk. Luckily, I was walking through a science room and I looked through a window into a classroom and saw two teacher desks. The teacher in there said he didn't want it, so I moved it the next day (after getting tired of waiting for maintenance to do it for me).
The chair that was in there was crap. One cushiony arm thingy was missing entirely and it was just bare metal, and the other one had no cushion but the wood that the upholestery was stapled to was left. Plus, when you sat in it you could feel the springs. I ended up with a chair someone else was throwing away.
The computer that was in the room had no power cord, so I got one from IT, only to go back to my room and discover that the monitor had no power cord and the mouse was missing. I had to get those the next day, because IT had left for the day. The next day, I went to set it up, only to realize that my new desk was too small for the ginormous monitor, so I had to go on a treasure hunt for ANOTHER desk. I found one pretty quickly, but the way I set up my work area, my nice big cushiony chair was too big, so I traded someone else for a smaller, but still decent desk chair. He was really excited to get the one I'd had. He'd been coveting it. Heh.
I FINALLY got my computer set up, only to discover that the network card is bad. *sigh* And this AFTER I spent over a two hours deleting MSN Messenger (which had inherited some sort of bug and was asking me to sign in every thirty seconds even though I told it NO), deleting unwanted programs and documents, and changing backgrounds/screensavers/preferences to use less RAM. The idiot teacher who had the thing before me had fancy screensavers and crap on it. We're talking about a machine with a Pentium 4, 64 MB of RAM, and running Windows 98. No wonder the thing wouldn't work! With all my fiddling I was able to get the machine to boot up in five minutes, and if I could get a network card from IT, I'd be happy to keep it. There are people with machines in a LOT worse shape than that one.
Anyway, I still have to: print stuff to decorate my room (because I couldn't get to the network printer with no network card), write a rules poster (we're required to have our classroom rules posted and the one I did last week looks like crap), write two syllabi, enter my students into a program so I can keep records of attendance, write lesson plans, create sign in/sign out sheets for the hall pass (it's required and the school doesn't provide them), create a tardy sign in sheet (we're responsible for changing a student's attendance from absent to tardy in the computer by a certain time each day, and I'm not going to stop teaching to do it), track down floppy disks for my computer math class (because there are NO CD burners in the comp lab and since all the machines are Windows 98 they don't take flash drives), make a September AND October calendar of events to post in my classroom, figure out how close Star Office spreadsheets actually are to MS Office Excel (because we don't have liscensing rights to MS Office so I'm teaching computer math on Star Office, which I've never used), oh and finish cutting close to 400 tickets for a school dance (Isn't being an SGA co-sponsor grand? I already can't feel my hand cause I spent FOUR HOURS numbering and cutting tickets yesterday). Oh yeah, and I need to do laundry AND go grocery shopping so I have clothes to wear and food for lunch on Tuesday.
Yay, three day weekend?!
Oh, and I SERIOUSLY want to spend some time on my comms and fanfics, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get to. Which seriously sucks because I feel like I'm abandoning all my wonderful friends... and not helping at all at TWO RPGs I'm supposed to be modding. I haven't even signed in to one in TWO weeks. To be perfectly honest, though... that game annoys me, and I was trying to help a friend out, but... UGH. I may just talk to the Remus-mun and quit. I can't handle two RPGs, teaching, and two Blades comms, and the two "gasms" comms. Not that I do much at the last two. Still... yeah. Anyway...
As if this week wasn't hectic enough already (I didn't list HALF of what actually happened/went wrong) I broke my Guitar Hero controller. My wonderful hubby managed to fix it today, though.
Edit: Yay! The list is getting smaller. Maybe I WILL have some sort of weekend. I'm not going to get my hopes up, though. - Mood:stressed

Well, Thursday and Friday I had New Teacher Orientation, which was... in general... pointless. Though, I did meet the other three new math teachers who are going to be at my high school. I think the most interesting thing happened during lunch on Thursday, though. ( You can just read a book. )It looks like I MIGHT be coaching golf - with my huge one semester of experience. I dunno... I have to find out the details... and I really want to know why Captain Hutton (the Captain of the JROTC program and the one who wanted me to start playing golf in the first place) isn't going to be coaching anymore. Friday I went to Wal-mart and did some shopping for desk organizing stuff - like pencil cups and drawer organizers and all that stuff. I looked and looked and looked... most of the stuff was metal and wood, but they had a set that was made out of 25% post-consumer recycles plastic for the same price, so I got that instead. Just one little thing in my attempt to help save the planet. Speaking of which... I got my recycling bins earlier this week. I've set them up in my dining room because there's not enough room in my kitchen. So far, I'm the only one to use them, but... oh well. At least my concious is cleaner than my husband's. Today, I went and looked at a new washer and dryer, because we've needed one forever, and I finally have the money now. We picked out the one we want, but the husband is going to run a new line and install a new breaker for it so that we can still have air and wash clothes (which we can't do now). After that, we drove to the Harley shop, because he's been wanting a Harley. We looked around at a few, and he sat on a couple, just to see which one he liked. We were planning on buying a used on eBay. But was we walked back into the newest ones we saw this beautiful black and pearl orange custom Sportster. Awesome. I fell in love, and I KNEW that if we walked away, we'd never find one like it again. So... I bought it. Stupid me, I didn't get a picture, but here it is on the Harley website. We can pick it up Monday or Tuesday, and I'll get more pictures then. Yeah... I think I've gone insane. Ummm... and now... a meme. Taken from mugglerock , who I'm sure stole it from someone else. Insomnia is BALLS. Like seriously. I can't sleep. I have no creative urges to write. There's nothing on TV; I don't particularly want to watch a movie. I have nothing to read. So, my mind is racing thinking about all the things I need to do tomorrow, that I probably won't get done because I'm lazy. I've decided to write pointless entries about real life ( Random RL Stuff - Cut to keep you from dying from boredom )- Mood:awake

I spent most of today helping the husband put up a fence in the backyard. We got 100 foot of it put up, before we had to go to the hardware store to get more, and before I had to eat before passing out. Stupid blood sugar.
Anywho, I was hoping that I'd have all sorts of Ferrell products to squee over, but I STILL haven't gotten six DVDs that I ordered on 08/02. Stupid people didn't ship until 08/07 and the post office is saying they didn't receive the package until 08/09. It BETTER be here next week.
Still, I got my copy of the Premiere Magazine with Will on the cover. It's in AWESOME condition. I hope to get scans up in high enough resolution that you can read the articles. Others have scanned it, but the resolution wasn't high enough to read. Also, I picked up Kicking and Screaming (Will's soccer movie) for $6 at Dollar General today. I got it mostly so that I could cap it, because I've watched it AT LEAST 30 times. I have it memorized practically. That's what happens when they put a Will movie on HBO Demand - I watched it anytime there was nothing else on TV and I was too lazy to put a DVD in. Sadly, the two Will movies On Demand this month are Curious George which is FAR too mind numbing to do that to and Wedding Crashers, which I've already seen AT LEAST 30 times.
I think that's about it from my BORING day of physical activity. It was hot today and my brain is fried... - Mood:productive

This is the last little bit I'm going to write about all the DRAMA! over in my beautiful BoG comms. Double standards suck. I can't believe that someone who CLAIMS to be "proud of our porn" would rather have JUST the visual porn locked and leave all the WRITTEN porn open. HELLO. If you are TRULY proud of our porn, wouldn't you rather see it all open?!?! Which, believe me, is how I feel. However, I'm also practical, and if leaving our porn unlocked makes us a potential victim of harrassment and other not so good things (like bannanation) then, I'm all for locking it. At least we'll get to write/draw our porn and share it, too.
And on to more DRAMA! only, real life this time, and drama that afterward caused me to LAUGH. Alright, every Thursday my husband and I eat at Wendy's. Why? It's right down the street from the house where we have our Hot Wheels club meetings. Don't look at me like that! Hot Wheels are AWESOME, and I TOTALLY need to show you guys my custom cars so you believe me!
Anywho, this Wendy's is typically not so great as they've been having managerial issues for the past month or so. We've called the complaint center twice in the last month. Yet... still... we go. I think we are gluttons for punishment. Ball one: the place had NO ketchup. NONE. Not even in packets. NONE. And the idiots were giving out the nugget dipping sauces with fries. Soooo.... what do you do when you're out of dipping sauces? Ball two: the sandwhich maker was eating fries out of the fry vat... WHILE MAKING SANDWICHES. Can we say, health code violation? Ball three: the manager brought an employee out to the dining area to give her a speech about messing up an order. That wasn't her fault. And was loud enough for the entire dining area to hear. Is there NO OFFICE?!?! Ball four, you're out!: the sandwich makes (same one from earlier) was hanging out at the counter (on the customer side) eating a sandwich. My husband needed a Frosty spoon. I get up, go get a spoon. I can FEEL the guy staring at me... and I'm just WAITING for the idiotic comment to come out of his mouth. Three... two... one, "Yo, I ain't tryin' to be rude or nuthin' but she got a black girl booty." Loud enough for EVERYONE to hear. It wouldn't have been bad if it was quiet. I'm used to shit like that. But loud enough for the ENTIRE restaraunt to here. Amber don't play that game. So, I'm waiting on my husband to say something to him, and he doesn't. So, I speak up, "Hey yo, I ain't tryin' to be rude or nuthin' but the next time you wanna talk about my ass, you might wanna do it where I can't hear it." The girl behind the counter that he was talking to tried to help him cover.
Yeah, sadly, even though I'm white, I went to the blackest school in town. I'm TEACHING at the blackest school in town. I can walk the walk, talk the talk, and beat them with their own attitude. They weren't expecting that. They'll be even more upset when they walk into my classroom in September. A warning to teenagers everywhere: Just because someone LOOKS young, doesn't mean they aren't old enough to be your boss. Just because someone LOOKS young, doesn't mean they aren't old enough to be your teacher. Just because someone LOOKS young, doesn't mean they are, and you best learn to keep your mouth shut. And now I laugh, because damn is he going to regret opening his big mouth. - Mood:chipper

Holy Crap WTF?!?! I'm WELL on my way to meeting my Holy Quest to see ALL Will Ferrell's movies that have been released, as you can see by checking out my list (which will open a new window). Anywho... I've been looking for The Thin Pink Line. I SERIOUSLY remember seeing it advertised when it came out. I was all of 13 and living with my all too protective mother, so there was no way in hell I was going to see a movie about a gay death row inmate. I've checked eBay, Amazon, Half.com... I even resorted to using Froogle. I can find the book... but NO ONE... I MEAN NO ONE has a DVD or VHS for sale. Was it NEVER released or something? Did it bomb in the theaters SO BADLY that it never hit home media?!?! Does ANYONE have a copy or know where I can get one? I'm about to start calling all the video rental places in a 50 mile radius to see if I can hunt it down. Apparently... I'm not the only one having the problem. If you check out IMDBs Message Boards for the movie ( here, scroll to the bottom), just from the titles you can see that people are having a major WTF?! over this movie. x-posted to ferrellgasm, in the hopes that some other rabid Will Ferrell fan has this or knows where I can find it. - Mood:aggravated
